Judge: Girl's name, Talula Does The Hula, won't do
July 24th, 2008 @ 4:25am
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.
Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.
Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.
The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."
The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.
In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.
Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.
New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

10 now let's hear it from you:
I was just reading that before I saw your blog. That is pretty funny. It reminds me of a song named "a boy named Sue"
When I first started reading your blog, I thought you were making an announcement--looking for girl names or something. ;-)
I have often wondered what people are thinking with some names, but I've never heard any quite so ridiculous as that. How dumb! The judge said it best about really wondering about the parents because of their choice of name for her. Crazy stuff. Thanks for sharing! :-)
Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? I wonder. We might never have wanted to know what one smelled like if it were named Tulula Does The Hula. I like "rose"; I think it suits it. :-)
And to think, people told me not to use Jeremy because it was just "too plain."
Well so much for the poor pioneer girl on a geneology record named 'Mary Jane Molly Tolly Beauty Skin Cabbage Head Slade Wellington McRoberts. For Real.
Dad
Dad! That was too funny- I sit here laughing aloud...Sorry
Sharon, I think your story just got outdone by dad- and that wasn't easy!
(For the record, your story got a chuckle out of me as well, along with some disbelief at the sense some people don't seem to have much of.)
PS... If dad still remembers that name, and repeats it to himself 10 times daily, I predict he will stave of alzhiemers disease.
Das, for good measure, could you have mom join in when you do this powerful brain exercise. Diapers are kinda expensive, and we need the money for gas these days. Thanks.
Dad, not Das- duh..
Some people never cease to amaze me. TFS Sharon!
I never like the name that my parents gave me or how they used to spell my name. Everyone mispronounced it and I still have never figured out how to pronounce my first given name. I feel for children in this situation. It really makes you wonder what some people are thinking. My thoughts have always been that my children will have better and be better then what I had. Thanks for post
